Since 2008, Argolis has been producing beautifully rich PGI Argolis wines (Argolis Local Wine) and the region also has a long tradition of bio or organic winemaking. Guests staying at Perivoli Country Hotel & Retreat can visit many local vineyards in the area and see for themselves how these grapes are cultivated, as well as learning just what exactly goes into a bottle labelled "bio" or "organic" wine. The main varieties grown in the area and Nemea are Agiorgitiko, Moschofilero, Assyrtiko, Roditis, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot amongst others.

The first thing to realize is that biological wines are made from grapes that have been grown organically. This means that any use of chemicals, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides is strictly forbidden. Only natural substances are allowed to be used in the cultivation period, such as sulphites and manure, with the aim of preserving the distinct local character of each wine. EU guidelines only allow for a tiny amount of sulphites to be used before certifying a vineyard as "bio".

In fact, Greece is a country that has always found it easy to produce organic produce, with its robust Cycladic and Aegean winds, temperate weather, favorable terrain and small sized vineyards, all of which favor the vine's health without allowing for extensive growth of damaging microorganisms. The local fauna and flora help to conserve the balance of the vine's environment and farmers also use 'green manure'; an ancient technique whereby nitrogen rich plants are plowed into the soil around the vines in spring.

It's not surprising that around 50% of all Greek wineries currently produce some wines made from organic grapes. The wineries are certified as organic through one of eleven local Greek organizations and there are even annual organic wine competitions held around the country. The advantages for the wine consumer are obvious and, with more and more people turning to naturally cultivated products, the demand for bio wines is a fact.

So, next time you try a glass of Greek bio wine, remember that it is full of natural goodness, made from healthy grapes that have been cultivated using age-old traditions, sweetened by the summer sunshine and flavored by the rich soil that the vines themselves grew in.
