Pack your running shoes and join us for Nafplio Castle Run 2019, one of the most exciting athletic events of the year! Get your heart pumping on Greece's one and only "castle run" which takes place on Sunday November 24th in view of Nafplio's stunning panorama, amid the fascinating ruins of Palamidi fortress. Since 2015 this scenic Venetian-influenced town has been hosting the annual race, and it is now considered one of the region's annual highlights with participants traveling from all over the country to join in on the fun.
The 5 km Castle Run is the most notable part of this event. It includes the ascent of 999 steps to Palamidi Fortress, a sprint through the castle itself and then a smooth gravel-paved descent back into town, with Nafplio spread out below like a tapestry; this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful races in Greece. More ambitious competitors can take on the 10 km Road Race, and there is also a 3 km Fun Run as well as a 1,5 km Junior Run aimed at families with children. Participants of the Castle Run and Road Race can expect to find refreshment stands along the way, as well as doctors and adept first-aid personnel on the scene; also, there will be a medal awarded to all runners in support of exercise as a positive habit.
This event is organized by the Municipality of Nafplio as well as the Regional Union of Argolis, always in search of ways to promote the unique history and culture of this truly unique area. Other notable co-organizers are the Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, on a mission to promote Hellenic civilization through various humanitarian pursuits and engaging activities with surrounding communities. Also supporting the event is the Sports Club of Argolis, which hosts tournaments and group exercises year round.
