15 must-do activities and things to do in and around Nafplio

Mai 4. 2023 15 must-do activities and things to do in and around Nafplio

When it comes to exploring the region, Nafplio should be at the top of your list. This unique destination has something to offer for everyone, regardless of the season.

Getting back to nature and appreciating the wonders of the land is a precious pursuit these days, which is why we offer you the 15 top things to do in the area that will make your stay not just a holiday, but a real odyssey. Pack your bags and get ready to embark on an adventure you'll never forget! To navigate to a specific activity, use the short links below.

CAVING

Argolis is one of those rare places with an abundance of breathtaking natural landscapes and fascinating geology at every turn. Its caves make for great hiking destinations—cool and shady during the summer, they can be perfect for escaping the dazzling sun. Some also take part in the area's vibrant history, so be prepared: There could be cultural discoveries in your day trip as well!

Start your journey at Didima, a tiny mountain village under an hour's drive from Perivoli Country Hotel & Retreat. From afar, the large crater which looms within the cliff face over this little settlement makes for an imposing sight. Although named Megali Spilia (Large Cave), it's actually considered to be a sinkhole, perfect for an exhilarating trekking session. Just bring your hiking shoes!

Also near Didima, its smaller counterpart, Mikri Spilia (Small Cave), gains in significance where it lacks in size. Visitors to this sinkhole quickly find that two Byzantine chapels have been built inside. The murals which were hand-painted on the walls of Agios Georgios in the 13th century are remarkably preserved, never failing to fill their viewers with awe. Metamorfosi Sotiros is also quite exceptional, since it was built into the surrounding rock. Both of these places of worship are completely unique, but don't see many daily visitors, so this might be the perfect destination if you're on the lookout for an area free of tourists. Mikri Spilia also provided protection to the villagers of Didima during multiple attacks and invasions, including during World War II. This adds another layer to the sacred nature of this place.

The journey back in time continues: Our next stop is near Porto Cheli, a charming little seaside town which is an hour away from Perivoli Country Hotel & Retreat by car. Franchthi Cave is one of those places in the world where humanity may have taken some of its first steps—ancient vestiges of prehistoric hunters have been found here, such as stone tools which date back as far as 28,000 BC. You can now walk through this cave which has witnessed our ancient beginnings, as wooden footpaths have been laid around its perimeter, along with information boards containing details about our earliest ancestors.

Every season is caving season here! Experience all aspects of these amazing destinations by exploring every nook and cranny.

CYCLING

From rolling vineyards to verdant orchards, the area is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Cycling is a fantastic activity suitable for all ages, offering ample opportunities for exploration.

Ancient trails and breathtaking landscapes await you on our (guided) hiking tour in Nafplio, which will take you on a journey through time and nature, along the coast of the Argolic Gulf to serene riverbanks.

A good and short hike to do in summer is the one from Nafplio town to Karathona Beach, which is just 2.5 kilometers away, via the sea road. For this Summer Stroll, begin your walk from the main car park in the town of Nafplio and enjoy the coastline vistas until you get to the small bay, where you will find four picturesque little churches, one of them dating back to the 15th century.

River Roam: The Erasinos River runs through Nea Kios, a small traditional fishing village full of fish taverns and coffee shops. Beginning where the colorful kaiki (fishing boats) are moored, make your way along the river as it meanders inland and then turn back towards the beach until you reach the Roumani swamp. Various bird species can be spotted here as this is one of the most important wetland habitats of the Argolis Prefecture.

Mentioned in Greek mythology for its fresh water springs and a bottomless lake said to lead to the underworld, Myli is a little village full of interesting facts. The walk up the hill to its Frankish tower, also known as Princess Tower, is the highlight of this Tall Stories hike. From the tower ruins, be prepared for great views of the coast both to the North and South, which you can enjoy while having a welcome picnic.

The 2,500 year-old country road from Ancient Epidaurus to Asclepius was once tread by the ancient Athenians. Known as the healing path, you can spend a few hours walking through scenic countryside along a dry creek lying at the bottom of a low ravine edged by pines and aromatic bushes on this Sacred Paths hike. Only about two kilometers in total, it is a lovely way to immerse yourself in the beauty and mystery of the area.

Golden Steps: Drive to the church of Ioannis Theologos at Nea Epidaurus and then head on foot towards Chrysospiliotissa, the Gold Cave. Sitting at a height of about 700 meters on Mount Acharneo, the views on the way up are truly outstanding. Pass the tiny village inhabited mainly by goats and chickens until you arrive at the cave, which houses a tiny little church adorned with Byzantine icons. Truly a golden opportunity to marvel at this sacred spot which has remained mostly unknown until now.

Lace up your hiking shoes and experience the magnificent natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of the region like never before!

Nafplio's crags are poised dramatically above the waves, but the solid limestone they are made of provides a steady foothold and the area's mild climate makes this a great place to be during those cooler months of the year.

Those who would like to take in panoramic views from a higher altitude can do so at Didima, a mountainous crag less than an hour's drive from Perivoli Country Hotel & Retreat.

This area is 1,100 meters above sea level, so it remains blissfully cool in the summer months and is always shady during the afternoon hours. It is equipped with more than 70 routes, with varied levels of difficulty. There are routes for beginners, seasoned climbers, and even family expeditions.

PARAGLIDING

Don't miss the opportunity to paraglide over the wilderness of the Peloponnese. All you need to bring is courage and excitement. Necessary equipment can be rented on-site. Are you ready for this once-in-a-lifetime experience in one of the most breathtaking areas?

BIRDING

During the months of autumn, Nafplio's warm, welcoming climate attracts many visitors, not few of which are of the winged variety. Those who walk along the coast of this scenic town may glimpse more than Venetian architecture. Stunning birds can often be seen in the sea, many of which are native to more tropical temperatures and are merely here for a short stop on their migration journey, some even endangered species. Take a short drive to Nafplio from Perivoli Country Hotel & Retreat for an unforgettable birdwatching adventure.

Few visitors to Nafplio know that it is actually a frequent stop in the migration pattern of flamingos. Despite their slender appearance, flamingos are actually very durable and can withstand conditions that most animals cannot. In fact, alkaline and highly saline lakes are their favorite habitat—once there, they feed on blue-green algae which most would find to be highly poisonous. This is not the case for these fascinating birds, which can consume it in large amounts. This unique underwater growth is the source of their pink color, which they acquire over time.

In the shallow coastal waters of Nafplio, hundreds of black-winged stilts are known to land during spring months, transforming the waterfront into a viewing spot for stunning birdlife. Though only 35 cm in height, these radiant creatures can be easily pointed out because their long red legs are not tucked in during flight. Their black wings and white bellies also provide a contrast that makes them hard to miss. The population of Argolis feels truly grateful for this yearly visit from such a breathtaking endangered species of wildlife.

Another bird in need of our protection, the black stork, has been seen in the wetlands of Nafplio as well. A meter in height, this impressive creature is sure to grab your attention. It usually prefers its solitude, building nests in tall trees in the woodlands, so watch carefully.
